The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Alina Kalkite €4,800 gross after finding Tlc Launderers Ltd t/a Tlc The Linen Company had not paid her notice wages. The decision, dated 24 June 2024, also found she was entitled to a statutory redundancy payment after the alternative job offered to her was found unsuitable.
Kalkite had worked as a laundry operative for about 18 years. The offered job was in food production, a different industry and location, and she had no experience in that work. The WRC found that she did not unreasonably refuse it. The redundancy entitlement was based on employment from 1 September 2004 to 22 April 2022, a lay-off period from 1 April 2020 to 22 April 2022, and gross weekly pay of €600, subject to the stated insurability condition.
The WRC found Kalkite was entitled to eight weeks’ statutory notice. She was notified of redundancy five weeks before her employment ended and received no pay for the notice period. The €4,800 gross compensation was for those unpaid notice wages.
