The Workplace Relations Commission awarded €500 after finding that a hotel indirectly discriminated against a Traveller woman by refusing her a stay because she did not have a credit card. The decision was dated 18 July 2023.
The hotel said its credit-card policy protected it against room damage and unpaid charges and applied to guests generally. The adjudication officer found the policy put Travellers at a particular disadvantage in accessing credit, and that requiring a credit card was not the only suitable way to provide security. The WRC also ordered the hotel to allow other reasonable forms of security.
A separate race discrimination complaint was withdrawn.
