WRC awards wheel technician €2,800 for unfair dismissal

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded wheel technician Paddy Phoenix €2,800 after finding he was unfairly dismissed by Alex Crean t/a Dublin Motor Zone. The decision was dated 12 May 2023. Phoenix said he was dismissed after being confronted about occasions of lateness. The respondent did not attend the hearing, and the officer found no evidence had been provided to show the dismissal was fair. The officer noted Phoenix found alternative work quickly and that his efforts to find work affected the redress assessment. The WRC also awarded Phoenix €1,000 for the failure to provide written employment terms on time and the equivalent of one week’s remuneration for dismissal without notice. A separate annual leave complaint was upheld with €1,000 compensation. His rest-break complaint was found not well founded.
