The Workplace Relations Commission dismissed 26 complaints brought by Professor Dr. Joseph Chikelue Obi against the Data Protection Commissioner, finding them misconceived and incorrectly based in law. The decision was dated 2 May 2023.
Obi said the Commissioner had breached laws covering employment, equality, pensions, redundancy and other matters. The respondent disputed the claims and said Obi had never been its employee. The adjudicator noted that Obi had described himself as self-employed in connection with his Pandemic Unemployment Payment application and found no employment relationship with the Commissioner.
The WRC dismissed the complaints under the relevant statutory provisions, including claims concerning unfair dismissal, equality, pensions, redundancy and employment terms. It found the claims misconceived because the legal grounds relied on did not apply to Obi’s relationship with the Commissioner. The decision records that he had submitted about 180 claims relating to these matters.
