WRC rejects Ian Kilroy’s religion-discrimination complaint against TU Dublin

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) rejected Ian Kilroy’s religion-discrimination complaint against TU Dublin in a decision dated 13 July 2022. The case concerned the university’s chaplaincy and religious facilities, as well as an email about Lent sent to staff and students.

Kilroy said the chaplaincy served Christians and that other faiths lacked equivalent dedicated space. He also objected to receiving an unsolicited email about Lent. TU Dublin said it provided neutral spaces and multi-faith support, and that the email went to all staff and students. The WRC found that Kilroy had not established personal discrimination over the facilities or chaplaincy. It also found that receiving the email did not amount to less-favourable treatment, which is needed to establish discrimination under the law.
