WRC disallows Stephen Walsh’s appeal for redundancy payment

The Workplace Relations Commission disallowed Stephen Walsh’s appeal for a redundancy payment from Shannon Coiled Springs Limited, finding that he had not been made redundant. Adjudication Officer Shay Henry dated the decision 30 November 2021. Walsh said he continued working for the family company from Canada after moving there in 2016 and that his role was later abolished. The company asked him to confirm his availability to work, received no response and gave him eight weeks’ notice. The adjudicator found the company’s request for clarification and the time given to respond were reasonable. As Walsh did not contact the company to explain his role or availability, the WRC concluded that he had abandoned his position. It disallowed the appeal.
