The Workplace Relations Commission ordered JNI Structures Ltd to pay Marius Cozac €1,300 after finding the company had unlawfully deducted the money from his final wages. The decision was dated 18 May 2022. Cozac told the hearing he worked as a construction worker and van driver from August 2019 to October 2020. He said the company deducted €1,300 to cover damage after a road accident involving its van. JNI Structures Ltd did not attend the hearing, but the adjudication officer was satisfied it had received notice. The officer accepted Cozac’s evidence and found that he had not agreed to the deduction and had not been issued an employment contract. The complaint under the Payment of Wages Act 1991 was well founded. The company was ordered to pay €1,300 within 42 days of the decision.
