The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) awarded Elena Balan €20,000 after finding that Corajio Unlimited Company T/A Mr. Price discriminated against her by dismissing her while she was on maternity leave. The decision was dated 24 June 2022.
Balan also received €780 in notice pay. She said she had been dismissed while on maternity leave and had not been paid notice. The company rejected her allegations and said she had quit.
The adjudicator found that a manager ended Balan’s employment without receiving a resignation letter. The decision said she was dismissed after indicating she might not be able to return immediately from maternity leave. It also noted that the employer had not provided written grounds for the dismissal, as required in the decision’s account of the pregnancy directive.
