WRC rejects three complaints after finding Shannons Solicitors placement was work experience

The WRC found that Vladlena Soltan's arrangement with Shannons Solicitors was work experience, not employment, and ruled three statutory complaints not well founded. Adjudication Officer Michael McEntee dated the decision on 11 November 2021. Soltan said she was offered work, later told there was no more work, and was not given written terms or minimum notice. Shannons Solicitors said she was on a work-experience placement. The officer accepted that there was no contract of employment, so no requirement to provide written terms or minimum notice arose. On the related industrial-relations dispute, the WRC recommended that future legal internships and work-experience arrangements be set out in a written document.
