The Workplace Relations Commission awarded Caroline McNeill €40,170 after finding Galway Civic Trust unfairly dismissed her in a redundancy process that failed to follow fair procedures. The decision was dated 15 September 2021.

McNeill, a supervisor on a Community Employment Scheme, said she was told in front of colleagues that she would be made redundant without consultation or consideration of other work. Galway Civic Trust accepted her account and said a change in the scheme’s structure left no funding for her role.

The WRC found that a redundancy situation existed, but the Trust did not engage with McNeill about the decision, consult her, consider alternatives or allow her to attend meetings with a representative. It awarded compensation for financial loss, noting her efforts to find other work. The €40,170 award did not include statutory redundancy pay.
