WRC orders €200 compensation after driver’s 14-hour trips left only 10 hours’ rest

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission ordered a transport provider to pay a night-time driver €200 compensation after two 14-hour round trips to Kerry left him only 10 hours’ rest. The WRC also required the employer to recognise his entitlement to 11 hours’ rest in every 24-hour period. Adjudication Officer Penelope McGrath dated the decision on 16 November 2017.

The driver worked five nights a week and objected to the trips because they cut short his rest. The employer relied on a reduced-rest arrangement but acknowledged that the driver had not agreed to it. It said it would respect his 11-hour rest entitlement going forward.
