WRC rejects customer’s race discrimination complaint over amusement arcade ban

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission rejected a customer’s race discrimination complaint against an amusement arcade and betting casino, finding that management barred him because it believed he had used skill to gain an advantage at roulette. Adjudication Officer Catherine Byrne dated the decision 3 April 2018.

The customer said managers used racial abuse after he won €6,000 and later barred him. The duty manager denied using racial terms and said he suspected the group knew how to gain an advantage on the roulette machine. The officer did not find the alleged abuse credible, citing the customer’s long, previously friendly relationship with management and his return to the premises. She found that an Irish customer in the same position would also have been barred.
