The WRC did not uphold an apprentice’s minimum wage complaint, finding that the National Minimum Wage Act did not cover apprentices on a formal SOLAS scheme. The decision was dated 10 November 2017. The apprentice said his unpaid suspension while appealing the termination of his apprenticeship left him without income, and claimed €6,682 in lost wages. The manufacturing company said it retained him during the appeal but could not pay him. The officer found it was the apprentice’s responsibility to resolve his social welfare situation. On the related Industrial Relations Act complaint, the officer found he had no claim against the company and made no recommendation.
