WRC awards worker €7,010 after employer misses hearing

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded a worker €7,010 across four complaints after his employer failed to attend a hearing. The decision, dated 4 April 2018, found the claims well founded. The worker said he had completed forms for written terms but never received a statement. He also said his first wages were paid about 45 days after a takeover at €9 an hour rather than the €10.75 rate he said he was due, that holiday pay remained outstanding and that he was dismissed without notice. The adjudicator accepted the worker’s uncontested evidence. The WRC awarded €5,000 for unfair dismissal, citing a lack of fair procedures; €360 over the written-terms complaint; €280 in outstanding wages and €650 for holidays; and €720 for minimum notice.
