WRC awards €2,500 after landlord discriminated against family seeking rental home

By Donal Gilhooly

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded €2,500 to a worker after finding that a landlord discriminated against the family when refusing to consider them for another rental property because they had brought a case against the landlord. The decision was dated 1 May 2018.

The worker said a representative told him the family would not be offered another property because they had taken a case against the landlord. The adjudicator found the worker’s evidence credible and the refusal discriminatory on family grounds. The landlord did not attend the hearing or rebut the complaint.

Although the worker had not sent an ES1 form, the adjudicator found exceptional circumstances excused this and the landlord had notice of the complaint. The WRC found direct discrimination in the provision of rental accommodation and ordered the landlord to pay €2,500 compensation.
