WRC awards operative €1,797 in wages and €175 over missing contract

Workplace Relations Commission ·

A general operative won two of three complaints against an electrical company, with the WRC awarding €1,797 in unpaid wages and €175 compensation for not receiving a written contract. His minimum-notice claim was dismissed. Adjudication Officer Michael McEntee dated the decision 16 November 2017. The operative said he had agreed a rate of €21.49 an hour but was paid €9.50. The company did not attend the hearing despite proper notice. McEntee found the operative’s evidence credible on the contract and payment claims, awarding €175 compensation for the missing contract and €1,797 in wage arrears. The minimum-notice complaint failed because McEntee was not convinced the operative was entitled to notice pay; he may have stopped working after not being paid.
