The Workplace Relations Commission directed a cafe to pay a head chef €1,580 after finding he was underpaid €1,350 in wages and €180 in holiday pay. The decision was dated 30 August 2017. The chef said he had not received payment for his final week’s work or a day’s holiday pay. He also presented a text from the cafe’s bookkeeper saying there was no money to pay him. The cafe did not attend the hearing or make a submission. The adjudication officer accepted the uncontested evidence, found an unlawful deduction from wages and upheld the Payment of Wages complaint. The €1,580 compensation was payable after any lawful deduction.
