The WRC found that a worker resigned to join a competitor and rejected his unfair dismissal claim in a decision dated 20 November 2017. The worker said his employer had agreed to match a competitor’s €50,000 salary offer, then dismissed him before the increase began. The company said it needed to review its accounts before deciding and could not afford to match the offer. The WRC preferred the company’s evidence and found that the worker left for the competitor after learning it could not match the salary. The competitor’s offer had been reduced to €35,000 by the time he started there, when he earned €700 gross a week plus 1.5% commission on turnover.
