WRC declines pharmacist’s request to switch to sessional contract

By Eimear Byrne

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission could not recommend that a pharmacist move from a permanent, pensionable contract to a sessional role, despite a stated annual pay difference of about €17,000. Adjudication officer Pat Brady dated the recommendation 21 July 2017. The pharmacist sought the change to access the higher hourly rate paid to some colleagues. The health service provider relied on his existing contract and cited differences in benefits and security between the roles. The officer said the pharmacist would have to resign without certainty of being rehired, and that his contract remained in force unless the provider agreed to change it. The decision said collective bargaining might offer a route to address the pay difference.
