Race discrimination complaint over promotions fails

By Ruairí Dolan

Workplace Relations Commission ·

A staff nurse’s race discrimination complaint over missed promotions was not well founded, the Workplace Relations Commission found in a decision dated 10 April 2018. The employee, who had worked at the hospital since 2004, said she was repeatedly unsuccessful in applying for management and specialist roles. She alleged that interview scoring was inconsistent, explanations were lacking and her experience and qualifications were not properly considered. The employer denied discrimination and said the competitions followed its recruitment guidelines. The adjudication officer found that the different competitions involved different posts, criteria and selection panels, and that the evidence did not establish discrimination on race grounds.
