WRC directs retail store to pay two sales assistants €856.12 each over voucher bonuses

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC directed a retail store to pay two sales assistants €856.12 each after finding that paying their Christmas bonus in vouchers was an unlawful deduction from wages. The decision was dated 15 June 2017. The assistants said an agreement provided for a cash bonus and that the store changed the payment method without agreement. The store said employees had increasingly chosen vouchers and that the bonus practice could be varied. The adjudicator found the agreement had not been shown to have been varied by agreement, and that vouchers were not legal tender.
