WRC rejects customer’s race discrimination complaint against retail bank

The WRC did not uphold a customer’s race discrimination complaint against a retail bank in a decision dated 27 November 2017. Adjudication Officer Roger McGrath found the customer had not established facts showing discrimination.

The customer said a bank official rushed him through opening a seven-year fixed-term deposit account and misled him about closing it. He also complained that the bank did not answer his letters. The bank accepted that it had failed to respond and apologised, but denied that race was a factor. The WRC found the account allegations unsupported and no evidence linked the poor service to the customer’s race.
