Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission, through Adjudication Officer Patsy Doyle, awarded a lorry driver €20,000 for unfair dismissal by a logistics company, finding that he contributed 20% to his dismissal. The decision was dated 31 January 2018.

The driver said the company dismissed him after he objected to an extended run; the company argued that he had abandoned his job. The WRC found the company had sent him home, removed him from its roster and failed to follow fair procedures or establish substantial grounds for dismissal. It also awarded him €1,522 for failing to provide two weeks’ statutory notice and €1,522 for failing to provide written terms of employment. The WRC recommended that the company promote proper use of its grievance procedure.
