WRC dismisses driver’s complaint over dismissal by charity

By Rory Hanlon

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission found a driver’s unfair-dismissal claim against a charitable organisation not well founded and dismissed it. Adjudication Officer Michael McEntee dated the recommendation 20 July 2017. The driver said he was dismissed after taking the organisation’s van home during an urgent family situation. The organisation said its vehicles had to be parked at its designated facility and that it followed fair procedures. The adjudicator found that the driver admitted taking the van home, proper procedures had been followed, and dismissal was within the range of reasonable decisions for an employer in the charity sector.
