Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission ordered a hairdressing salon to pay a stylist €1,461.70 in wages deducted from his final pay. The decision was dated 30 November 2017. The stylist said he had not seen or signed the contract clause relied on to recover the cost of a training course. The salon said he had signed a contract allowing the deduction if an employee left within 10 months of training. The adjudication officer found the document was unsigned and that the stylist’s emails supported his evidence that he did not know of the term. The complaint under the Payment of Wages Act, 1991 was well founded.
