Trinity College Dublin defeats lecturer’s age discrimination and dismissal complaints

By Rory Hanlon

Historic decision · Decision date:

Place: no local area assigned from the source.

The WRC dismissed a lecturer’s complaints of age discrimination, discrimination in her employment conditions and discriminatory dismissal against Trinity College Dublin. The decision was dated 25 October 2017.

The lecturer said she was not shortlisted for an Assistant Professor post in Children’s Literature because of her age, and that the recruitment criteria favoured candidates with international experience. She also complained that she lacked proper facilities to meet students and that she had been discriminatorily dismissed. Trinity College Dublin said the selection panel used the same criteria for all applicants and could not see their ages.

The adjudication officer found that she had not shown she was better qualified than the successful candidates or identified a comparator. For the employment conditions complaint, she provided no supporting evidence. On dismissal, the officer found that she made a considered decision to leave and had not raised a grievance. All complaints failed.
