WRC awards €12,000 to worker unfairly dismissed after pregnancy and miscarriage

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The Workplace Relations Commission awarded €12,000 compensation to a worker after finding that a poultry-products producer unfairly dismissed her because of her pregnancy and miscarriage. The decision was dated 12 December 2016.

The worker said she was dismissed while away from work and providing medical certificates. The producer did not attend the hearing. Relying on her uncontested evidence, the WRC found the employer knew of her pregnancy and miscarriage before dismissing her and that the dismissal was on that basis.

The WRC chose compensation because it found there was not enough trust to continue the employment relationship, and ordered the producer to pay within six weeks.
