The WRC found a legal secretary’s claims against a legal firm were not well founded in a decision dated 20 April 2018. She sought wages for a 28-week solicitor training course and challenged a pay cut after returning to work. She said the firm had assured her she would return to her €520 weekly salary after training. The firm said she had agreed to train without pay and would return at the trainee solicitor rate. The WRC found she knew about and accepted the no-pay arrangement and had no statutory entitlement to payment for a course she undertook at her own expense. The WRC also rejected her constructive dismissal complaint. It found she had secured another job and chose to resign despite the firm offering to increase her salary.
