Care facility directed to set out reimbursement plan and pay €250

By Aoife Loughran

Workplace Relations Commission ·

A care facility was directed to set out how it would reimburse a health care worker for qualifying expenses incurred accompanying clients to off-site therapeutic activities. The WRC also awarded the worker €250 compensation in a decision dated 8 November 2017. The worker said small shortfalls in meal expenses had previously been covered by petty cash, but national travel rules ended that practice. The facility said it had to follow those rules. The WRC found the worker had a legitimate expectation that the expenses would be reimbursed and that applying the rules rigidly was obstructing the facility’s care work. It directed management to provide its reimbursement proposals in writing within eight weeks, without reducing clients’ budgets. The compensation was for breaches of terms-of-employment information requirements.
