The WRC found an employee’s dismissal fair after accepting that a builders providers business had grounds to dismiss him for gross misconduct. The decision was dated 28 August 2017. The employee admitted accepting money from a stove fitter but denied asking for it. The WRC found the fitter’s evidence credible and accepted that the business had a gifts policy that had been communicated to staff. It considered the short notice of the disciplinary meeting less than ideal, but found that the process otherwise met fair procedure standards. The dismissal was not disproportionate given the potential impact on the business and its reputation.
