WRC rejects manager’s unfair dismissal claim against airline company

By Niamh Kearney

Workplace Relations Commission ·

The WRC rejected a manager’s unfair dismissal claim after finding a redundancy situation existed. In a decision dated 20 July 2017, adjudication officer John Tierney found that colleagues had taken on aspects of the manager’s ramp manager role during his absence, and a review concluded the role was no longer required. The manager disputed that the redundancy was genuine and said the alternative roles offered did not suit his qualifications or abilities. The company said the work had been redistributed among junior managers and supervisors. A colleague gave evidence about the deputy director’s treatment of the manager, but the officer found the redundancy claim failed.
