WRC finds employer handled worker’s grievance reasonably

By Rory Hanlon

The WRC found that an employer had not handled a worker’s grievance unreasonably. The decision was dated 11 May 2016. The worker, a meat factory worker, said a colleague pushed and cursed at her and that the employer had not investigated the incident fairly. The employer said it reviewed CCTV, which showed nothing untoward or aggressive, and considered her grievance through three stages. The adjudicator found that the employer followed its grievance procedures, gave the worker a hearing and two appeals, offered mediation and said it would avoid rostering the two workers on the same production line where possible. The worker’s correspondence suggested she believed she had been treated differently because of her nationality, but she had not made a complaint under the Employment Equality Acts.
