The Labour Court rejected the Amalgamated Engineering And Electrical Union’s appeal and upheld the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation in a dispute with Caraher And Ward Limited over a worker’s redundancy selection. The decision was dated 19 February 1999. The union argued that the worker had been selected because of his union activities. The company said reduced brewery maintenance work left it with no alternative but to lay him off, and that a retained colleague had skills suited to continuing work. The Court found no reason to change the recommendation.
