The Labour Court upheld a recommendation for Aer Rianta to establish a relief panel for temporary telephone exchange vacancies lasting more than five weeks. In a decision dated 2 February 1998, the Court said the parties should discuss panel selection, with fairness and transparency at every stage. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union appealed on behalf of a worker with 14 years’ service in Aer Rianta’s cleaning section. She had previously covered telephone exchange work and wanted to apply for intermittent cover and receive first consideration for temporary relief work. Aer Rianta said short-term cover was arranged within the department, while longer vacancies were advertised through its Staff Vacancy Notice system.
