In 1998, the Labour Court upheld a recommendation that Mr John McGuinness T/A M.J.McGuinness & Sons pay a former shop assistant an extra-statutory £700 after her redundancy. The worker, who had worked in the shop since 1987, said her redundancy compensation was inadequate. The employer said the business had traded at a loss and she had received her statutory entitlements. Dated 2 October 1998, the Court found the recommendation reasonable and said it should be implemented. It noted that any payment in lieu of notice and outstanding holiday pay would be additional to the £700, if due.
