The Labour Court rejected a union appeal over a worker’s unsuccessful application for lead hand operator at Vanguard Plastics Limited, upholding a recommendation for discussions on future vacancies and lay-off procedures. The decision was dated 13 February 1998. The worker, represented by Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, said his 12 years’ service and experience made him better qualified than the successful candidate, who had been employed for 10 weeks. The union also raised concerns about the interview process and a personal matter involving the managing director. Vanguard Plastics said it followed normal interview procedures and the successful candidate was best qualified.
