Labour Court changes chargehand-rate recommendation for Quinnsworth worker

The Labour Court amended a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation in a dispute over the chargehand rate for a sales assistant at Quinnsworth’s Naas store. In a decision dated 22 May 1997, the Court found the chargehand differential was not appropriate, but said the shop assistant grade did not reflect the duties and responsibilities of the job. Mandate had appealed the recommendation, which said the union should accept that the chargehand rate was not appropriate. It argued the worker performed duties proper to a chargehand role. Quinnsworth said his duties were appropriate to a sales assistant and that he had no staff reporting to him or specific departmental responsibility. The Court asked the parties to examine a more appropriate arrangement for the role.
