Labour Court varies University College Galway worker's interim salary placement

The Labour Court changed an interim salary recommendation for a Supervisor of Engineering Services at University College Galway, placing the worker on the second point of the Administrative Officer scale while a proper job evaluation was pending. The decision was signed on 4 April 1995, and the Court said the evaluation should take place without delay. The College had appealed the Rights Commissioner's recommendation to place the worker at the top of the scale from 1 January 1992. It argued that the placement would be inequitable and retrospection would cost about £20,000. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union sought a higher grade and retrospective pay, citing the long-running claim and increased responsibilities. The Court supported an interim settlement but selected the second point as the more appropriate placement.
