Labour Court confirms £500 payment in Iarnod Eireann signalman dispute

In 1995, the Labour Court amended a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation in a dispute over a signalman’s bid for a post nearer home. The Court confirmed a £500 payment as an ex-gratia lump sum in full and final settlement, unrelated to travel expenses. The decision was dated 3 January 1995. Iarnod Eireann had appealed the recommendation. Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the worker was qualified and more senior than the appointed worker, and asked the Court to uphold the payment. The company said it had made no commitment to offer him the vacancy and had followed its practice of settling surplus staff locally.
