In 1994, the Labour Court altered a Rights Commissioner's recommendation on a nurse alcoholism counsellor's 21% pay allowance after an appeal by the South Eastern Health Board. It added that the red-circled arrangement would continue until a review of counsellors' conditions was finalised and implemented. The decision was signed on 9 May 1994.
The Psychiatric Nurses' Association said the allowance compensated the worker for lost premium earnings, while the Board argued that the higher rate was unfair to colleagues. The Court noted that the worker had transferred back into an area where other Nurse Alcoholism Counsellors worked and their pay was under review.
