In 1993, the Labour Court rejected the Services Industrial Professional Technical Union’s appeal over a ledger clerk post and a storeman’s promotion at the Army barracks in Athlone. The Union sought a civilian appointment to the clerk post and retrospective promotion for a storeman. The Department Of Defence said staffing reductions prevented a civilian appointment and opposed backdating the promotion. The Court found insufficient grounds to support the appeal and left the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation standing. It did not consider the recommendation concerning a second storeman, who had retired. The decision was dated 25 June 1993.
