In 1992, the Labour Court varied a Rights Commissioner’s £750 recommendation to £250 in full and final settlement of a bricklayer’s unfair dismissal claim against Liffey Developments. The decision was dated 27 August 1992, after both parties appealed. The worker said he had been assured of about six months’ work but was laid off after a few weeks. Liffey Developments denied making that promise and said the layoff followed a genuine decline in business. The Rights Commissioner had found the dismissal unfair and recommended £750; the Labour Court amended the recommendation to £250.
