In 1991, the Labour Court rejected Acco Ireland Limited’s appeal and accepted a Rights Commissioner recommendation that nine workers receive retrospective payments linked to a 7.5% productivity increase. The decision was dated 18 December 1991. The union, Services Industrial Professional Technical Union, sought the same retrospection for nine more workers after an earlier recommendation had led to payment for ten workers in a data binder assembly unit. The union said new working practices and increased productivity targets had operated from May 1990. The company argued the earlier agreement applied only to the original group and that the additional workers already had other productivity agreements. The Court accepted the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation and rejected the company’s appeal.
