The Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that Aughinish Alumina Limited pay a fitter for a missed call-out. The decision was signed on 18 October 1990. The National Engineering And Electrical Trade Union said the worker had been available under the voluntary roster and lost the chance to earn four hours’ pay at double time when a supervisor called another fitter. Aughinish Alumina Limited said it offered alternative work worth £55 plus overheads and argued it should not pay for time not worked. The Court said the recommendation was correct in light of the call-out system and should stand.
