In 1989, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation concerning a warehouse worker’s suspension and proposed dismissal at Sydney Cooper Distribution Limited. The decision was signed on 7 February 1989, following an appeal by the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. The recommendation called for the worker to return to the Ballymount warehouse without a six-month probation period and for five weeks of suspension to be paid. The union argued that the company had acted too harshly and sought restoration of the worker’s £187 weekly rate. The company said it had warned him about his performance and timekeeping.
