In 1989, the Labour Court upheld a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation that University College Dublin pay a worker £2,112 after his headquarters moved from Lyons Estate to Belfield. The decision was signed on 23 October 1989. The worker, an academic, sought £48,000 for projected extra travel costs over 17 years. The Rights Commissioner recommended £2,112, equal to one year’s additional travel costs. UCD argued that financial cutbacks and government and Higher Education Authority policy ruled out disturbance payments. The Court considered the recommendation reasonable and said both sides should accept it.
