The Labour Court upheld a recommendation that Buttercrust Limited pay £400 severance to a worker dismissed after her probation period. The decision was signed on 28 October 1988, following an appeal by The Bakery And Food Workers Amalgamated Union on her behalf. The Rights Commissioner had recommended the payment in full and final settlement if the worker was dismissed after probation. The union said Buttercrust had not returned her to her usual packing duties and that she lost overtime earnings. It sought £2,250 for those losses. Buttercrust argued that the worker’s absences during probation justified ending her employment and affected how overtime was allocated. The Labour Court found no adequate grounds to alter the recommendation, so the £400 payment stood.
