In 1988, the Labour Court left in place a Rights Commissioner’s recommendation concerning a porter’s exclusion from a voluntary severance scheme at Beaumont Hospital. The decision was signed on 14 April 1988. The Irish Distributive and Administrative Trade Union appealed on the worker’s behalf, arguing the scheme’s selection criteria were disclosed only after his dismissal. The Local Government Staff Negotiations Board and Beaumont Hospital said the criteria were applied impartially and only 55 of 78 applicants could be accommodated. The Labour Court decided that the original recommendation should stand.
