The Labour Court awarded £200 to a worker at Wellman International Limited after the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union appealed a £150 recommendation on the worker’s behalf. The decision was signed on 9 July 1987. The Court said the worker should receive £200 in settlement of the claim. The worker had applied for a first-aider post in 1983. Wellman advertised the vacancy in 1986 and selected by a draw, which the worker did not win. The union said the usual practice was to appoint the first suitable applicant and alleged the worker had been targeted for his Union Works Committee activity. Wellman denied discrimination, citing difficulty arranging training and greater competition for the post.
