The Labour Court rejected a firefighter’s claim for compensation over Limerick City Council’s handling of its sick pay scheme. The decision was signed on 19 July 2011. The Services Industrial Professional Technical Union said the worker was removed from the scheme without disciplinary procedures or an opportunity to answer an allegation of outside employment. The Council said it had repaid the sick pay withheld. The Court noted that the Council had added an investigation stage for future allegations of scheme abuse, found no merit in the compensation claim and upheld the Rights Commissioner’s recommendation.
